My first experience with Voice Over was delivering the weekend sports on WKOW-TV in Madison Wisconsin. Yes, that’s W-KOW in the Dairyland state. But I digress.
I wrote the script and delivered it straight to the camera. Inflection and pronunciation and enunciation were not a priority. Survival was. The next morning my neighbor, a Parisian lady who had just moved to the US came running downstairs… “Oh Richard, that was you last night on TV? Correct?” I said, “ya.” “I knew it,” she said. “I know your voice every time I hear it. I don’t have to see you. You’re marvelous. I love to listen to you. I can tell it’s you every time. “Magnifique”. Not bad for my first review. And so it began.

What the heck does he sound like?
Rick’s voice has been described as your best friend on the other end of the phone when you need to hear understanding, confidence and assured friendship. It just makes me feel good and that I’m in good hands. There’s a story there in his voice and I can’t wait to hear more.
Warm with a serious energy and he uses a pause as well as anyone. There’s a texture to his voice that says he’s a man full of life’s experiences and worth listening to. I trust him.
RHYMIN RICK
Rhymin Rick was born by accident during a morning country radio show in Seattle Washington. I was touring the US performing Standup comedy so the local Seattle station staff knew me. The station was having a contest to win tickets for an upcoming Garth Brooks concert. The station wanted artwork, original jokes, photos etc. pertaining to Garth Brooks. The only catch was it had to center around the live BBQ going on at the station. They called it the Great Garth Brooks Weenie Roast. People submitted all kinds of things: like paintings, really bad jokes, sculptures and one person even submitted a full portrait of Garth created out of Weenies.
I called into the show and said they weren’t giving Garth the respect he deserved and that I had written a poem in his honor. The name of the poem is Ode to the Weenie. The host immediately got on mic and said I was presenting a poem. His introduction was “Here’s Ode to the Weenie by Rhymin Rick Wells”.
The poem went over so well the program director called me the next day. He asked me if I wrote the poem and if so, could I do 2 or 3 per week. I said, “sure”. He offered me a $100 a poem.
Thus, Rhymin Rick Wells was born. Happy Birthday Rhymin.
PEOPLE ARE SAYING ...
“Dude! You killed it yourself. You sound like your 28 years old, all that energy in your voice and of course subtle nuance leaving the listener wondering…” What’s next Rick!?” I’d listen to him through a whole book! I’m serious, it’s a great reel, you did a fine job. Get it out there buddy, it’s gonna sell”
“Rick Wells is a consummate storyteller who consistently turns fun…into “Funtastic!” His pedigree of broadcast, media production and stand-up comedy ensures your project will be professional and creative. With a work hard, play hard agenda, Rick brings an energy of perfection to the booth!”
“Daaaammmnnnn. That’s the best stuff I’ve ever heard from you. That comfortable, empathetic, warm, familiar type of sound is your sweet spot. Nicely done. I know who to hire for my talent. ”
“Congratulations! This is good work, Rick!
My favorites were the Nike and ‘Stories’ spots. Specifically, notable lines are ‘and the silence of every heart.’ ‘Even the word singles, means two people.” I realized that my affinity for your work is especially for the quiet, wisdom-driven moments. If you’ve a wheelhouse, from what I’ve heard before and now, that’s it.”
“Very cool! I think you sound great. I mean, I would listen to you and I can’t say that for most narrators.”
